African American authors

Why do we pay so much attention to the work of African American authors? There is much debate about this topic, especially in the literary world. One reason that many people believe that we pay so much attention to African American authors is because of the difficulties that they have had, in history, trying to get published. Most people who came to live in this nation and who were black were taken from other countries and were sold as slaves to the people who lived here. This made it next to impossible for them to learn to read and write, and absolutely impossible for their work to get published. That, however, was an extreme shame, and is the entire reason why reading African American literature now is so intriguing. Back then, no one would ever guess at the importance that the works of black authors would have on the nation, but now we all know how important these stories, novels, and poems really are. In these stories we read about freedom, and we read about a culture of people who has had to struggle to be accepted and to find their place in this world. Even more recent African American authors have written about finding their place in the nation and about how they have searched for freedom, although it tends to be about personal freedom. This diverse culture is definitely filled with many artists who are able to churn out amazing stories and novels that are definitely worth reading over and over again, especially if you're reading some of the works that were written by some of the very first African American authors.
